Philippines: Richie Mepranum fails in title bid
By Edwin Espejo Jun 14, 2010 7:29AM UTCRichie Mepranum was stopped in the fifth round and failed to capture the vacant World Boxing Organization flyweight crown in Mexico City Sunday.
The Sarangani lad went down once in the fourth round and twice in the fateful fifth before the referee halted the fight.
Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda, a veteran of 37 fights before fighting Mepranum, is now the new WBO flyweight champion.
According to reports, Miranda peppered Mepranum with powerful body shots en route to a technical knockout victory.
It was Mepranum’s first stoppage loss and the only decisive one in a career that saw him register 22 wins against and a draw. He previously lost to Denkaosan Kaovchit via a controversial hometown decision in 2007 when the two fought in Thailand.
Mepranum took the fight in two week’s notice when Argentinian Omar Narvaez vacated the crown to campaign in the superflyweight division.
Richie’s manaqer, Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez, said they took the fight confident that Mepranum will be able to wrest the crown.
Mepranum was coming off a convincing win over Mexican knockout artist Hernan Marquez whom he beat in March in Texas.
Lopez saw some fights of Miranda in YouTube and liked his ward’s chances before the fight.
The switch-hitting Miranda previously failed twice to capture a world boxing title.
For Mepranum, it was his first title fight.
Lopez said he will confer with his ward and plan Richie’s future fights.
“Right now, Richie should take a rest,” Lopez said when informed of his ward’s debacle.
Richie is scheduled to fly back home this week along with his trainer Jonathan Tinagsa who accompanied the boxer in Mexico.
