Monash University is a public institution located in Melbourne, Australia. Its charter group of students began studying in 1961, and within 10 years more than 20,000 students had been enrolled. Monash is one of Australia’s leading universities, and it regularly features on global top-50 lists.

Today, Monash University has a student population of more than 55,000, more than half of whom study at the main Clayton campus where entry requirements are the strictest. As its educational programs mature, Monash has become especially well-known for its work in medical research, but it remains competitive in several scientific and liberal-arts-oriented fields.

Student Life
The main Clayton campus of Monash University has six residence halls where around 1,000 students and staff live. Students are represented by different clubs and organizations, the most important of which is the Monash Student Association (MSA). The MSA organizes activities and events on campus.

Clayton has all the trappings of a university town. Cultural programs are hosted in local venues like Robert Blackwood Hall, the Monash University Museum of Art and the Alexander Theater.

There are plenty of restaurants and pubs at Monash, but the best bar and club scene is to the north in Melbourne. In recent years, the entertainment scene in the central business district has gone through a renaissance and offers more for students to do than ever before.

Diversity
As with Melbourne and all of Australia, Monash is a diverse place to live. The Equity and Diversity Centre (EDC) promotes diversity and cultural awareness across the campus through its policies, planned activities and sponsored seminars. Part of this initiative is to foster opportunities for Australia’s indigenous people to receive higher education.

Monash supports international students by assisting with visa applications and extensions. Beyond this, the Monash University International Students Service (MUISS) looks after these students by operating a lounge, offering leadership training courses and hosting cultural-exchange programs. The English Language Center (MUELC) is another important resource that offers English-language resources and tutoring.

Academic Programs & Resources
There are several Monash campuses, each with their own academic offerings, but all major faculties are present at the central Clayton campus. The major courses of study are arts, business and economics, engineering, education, law, Medicine, Science and information technology.

In all, the university offers more than 6,000 courses. There are around seven students to every faculty member, which allows for plenty of first-hand instruction. Given the breadth of disciplines represented, each course of study has its own teaching methods, but students find that they receive a high level of access to professors and tutors.

Faculty & Staff
Notable staff at Monash University have included former senators John Button and Kay Patterson, philosopher Peter Singer, several justices of Australian high courts and a long list of award-winning writers. An even more impressive list of world leaders and leading thinkers are products of the Monash educational system.

As with most universities of this size, the main professors at Monash usually teach in large lecture halls, introducing concepts that will be further explored in discussion groups and labs led by post-graduate teaching assistants. Professors do maintain office hours for undergraduate students who need to speak with them at length.

Safety, Health & Wellness
Monash University provides world-class sports and fitness facilities. The Monash Sport website is a comprehensive portal with information about the university’s athletic facilities.

University Health Services provide a range of healthcare for students and faculty. The clinic is open from 9am until 5pm from Monday to Friday, and certain emergencies may qualify for a home visit. Doctors are also on-call after hours to tend to major emergencies.

International students are required to enroll an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy. This policy is purchased at the time of enrollment and must be maintained for the duration of their time in Australia.
