Controversy is growing with the Jeollanam-do Office of Education opening an investigation into a Gwangyang high school teacher who hit students.

At approximatey 12pm on March 23, 52-year-old “A” was teaching second-year high school students at their high school classroom in Gwangyang when a sleeping student forcefully insulted the teacher for waking her up.

“A” slapped the student’s cheeks four times, then used an instrument of some kind to beat her buttocks and ceased when the principal discovered the scene.

But the student’s parents say their daughter’s corporal punishment was severely excessive, reporting “A” to police and raising the likelihood of punishment by the Office of Education.

“A” did not go to school for two days at the beginning of this month, but returned when students called for “A” to return, while the student who was beaten has voluntarily elected to cease going to the school.

The high school announced, “teacher ‘A’ has felt considerable shame and wishes to accept punishment and move to a different school.”

Hardly an unusual level of corporal punishment in Korea, actually.
