Korn and Puea Thai
By Bangkok Pundit Dec 29, 2009 6:00PM UTCA few days ago Puea Thai made allegations that Finance Minister Korn used his position to obtain 14 upgrades to business or first class for himself and his family. At the time, it seemed these allegations were made without substance as little evidence was produced to support this. Korn defended himself and his wife filed a defamation lawsuit against Puea Thai as the Bangkok Post reports:
He also claimed Mr Korn and his family had requested excess luggage allowances from the airline.
Mrs Vorakorn denied the allegations, saying she and her family used gift vouchers issued by THAI as gold card members when upgrading the air tickets.
Mrs Vorakorn said she did not travel first class on every trip and would have the tickets upgraded when economy class was overbooked.
The Nation has the Puea Thai response:
In his statement, Anudit said he suspected Korn and Vorakorn to have improperly accepted gift vouchers from Thai Airways International. The vouchers were subsequently used for upgrading their Bangkok-London air tickets from business class to first class.
He said the costs of upgrading exceed Bt3,000, the legal limit for gifts given to a political office holder and spouse.
Under Article 149 of the Criminal Code, it is deemed a criminal offence for political office holders to seek and receive gifts.
Now, it seems clear that Puea Thai have been given some information as The Nation also reports:
The 14 upgrades were beyond what was allowed for Gold Royal Orchid Plus members, as cited by Korn’s wife Vorakorn, he said. Her claim that gift certificates were redeemed for the tickets was also questionable, he said.
They can be used only once a year, they are supposed to have codes identified in the records and they must be issued by a THAI executive for a specific person, he said.
Korn might have violated the law if his wife received a gift worth over Bt3,000 without declaring it, he said.
…
In a presentation, Anudit showed details of Vorakorn’s air ticket, which she had insisted was upgraded using the privilege of the gold card. The ticket was for seat 2F on the March 27 flight from Bangkok to London. He said the codes LHR F-J and GLD CERT UPGF meant the ticket was upgraded from business class at a special price to first class.
Korn’s ticket for seat 2K from London on April 27 showed the codes AUTH UGF by LonAA, he said.
It meant the ticket’s upgrade was authorised by “LonAA”, who is a director of THAI’s London office, without identifying what privilege Korn used.
It was also recorded that the tickets to London for Vorakorn’s two sons on April 12 were upgraded from economy to business class, Anudit said.
BP: Whether Korn is guilty of anything is a different question, but knowing people who fly regularly with Thai Airways, it seems they certainly got special treatment and his wife’s explanation is lacking. Now, in the scheme of things, we are not talking about a big amount and there may be nothing here. Then again, Samak was removed from office over a much smaller amount for the cooking shows so who knows. Nevertheless, Puea Thai seem to have someone who has been providing them with information so Korn and his wife should be careful on how they respond. We may have to wait until the no-confidence debate though for the rest of the details.
