Blogging opportunities in the next general election
By Chua Chin Leng Dec 04, 2009 7:51AM UTCIt is coming soon, and little changes are being put in place. Part of the suggested cooling off period, ok, all suggestions will become law soon, is that all political parties cannot say or do anything in the 24 hours prior to Polling Day. That will leave the field vacant for all the non partisan blogs to have a field day to say their piece.
Any organization that is legally defined as non-political should be able to conduct activities within the ‘cooling off’ period. Come to think of it, I am not sure what is the correct definition of a non-political blog? I always claim that mine is non-political because I am not a member of any political party nor beholden to any one of them.
Now what shall I write when everyone else is not writing while many are scurrying for election news? It is a rare opportunity when the professionals are all muzzled and not supposed to write. For one thing, I can adopt the professional, unbiased and objective reporting style of the mainstream media, giving equal coverage for all parties. I can also do what the ‘wrong’ side of cyberspace would be doing, and just report a one sided view.
Then I can take sides, whichever sides, and report the positive things they said or the negative things that were said. Or should I…?
Another way of covering the election is to adopt a humorous style, pick on some of the funny stuff that were said to make people laugh a little. Laughter is good medicine especially in a land where people only smile when told to smile. Satires are also a good form of writing that avoid being too personal. Somehow I got this feeling that humor is frowned upon in this land of mine. Can be risky too when rubbing up the wrong thing.
The opportunities to write differently are unlimited really, and can be fun. Oops, fun is not politically correct to say the least. Ah, must write factually and objectively and be fair to all parties. Would that work? I still have some time to work out my strategies. It is enjoyable to write when there is no editor looking behind your back. Maybe I will just write for whoever that pays me well. : )
