India’s exports are increasing and this one is not the usual suspect of software or textiles, nor wheat or sugar. It is Ketamine hydrochloride also called as date-rape drug.

Apparently India’s ketamine is of superior quality and demands high prices. 1 kg of the drug costs 35000 rupees in India and it is sold for 10 lakhs abroad. Don’t even calculate the ROI. It is probably the only investment, which promises that kind of ROI.

In 2007 Directorate of revenue Intelligence (DRI) captured 247 kg and in 2008-09 this figure jumped to 1173 kg. Exports are rising.Ketamine is legal in India and hence the proliferation. There are licensed manufactures in Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra and Gujarat but they are marked for export only.

The traffickers are also exporting it but only difference is it is not legal. Chennai happens to be the hub for its geographical connectivity to south-east Asia where the drug is banned.  (Source)

PS: With so much data involved in the whole thing I couldn’t resist writing about it.
