Sewol ferry survivors: We were told to stay on sinking shipBy AP News Jul 29, 2014 10:36AM UTC
ANSAN, South Korea (AP) — South Korean students who survived April’s deadly ferry disaster say they were repeatedly ordered by loudspeaker to stay in the sinking ship but eventually helped each other flee after their cabins were flooded too much.
The six girls testified Monday at a court session for the 15 ferry crew members who face charges of negligence and failing to perform their duties to rescue passengers. The court asked the media to not identify the teenagers to protect their privacy.
The students say they wore life jackets and were helped by friends to float out and leave flooded cabins.
One of them says she saw some friends swept away by waters.
More than 300 people died or are missing, and most of victims were students from a high school near Seoul.
