Introducing the NUIM School of Business
Job opportunities and employability are the focus of considerable attention in a challenging global employment market. As students have become more conscious of the need to develop ‘a stand-out CV’, the decision to undertake postgraduate study is more career-driven than ever before. The School of Business at Maynooth provides students with the personal student support that Maynooth is renowned for, backed by the industry experience of its lecturers, the ‘real-world’ focus of its course content, and the preparation for the workplace offered in the design of its programmes. Business at Maynooth comprises some of the most popular Masters programmes at the University, including the MSc Business Management and MSc IT Management for graduates without formal qualifications in Business and the MSc Strategy and Innovation for Business graduates.
Engaging, innovative, industry-led programmes
The MSc Business Management is a very popular choice at Maynooth because it offers a ‘no experience necessary’ Business Masters option for high quality graduates of other degree programmes, including Science, Social Science, Arts and Engineering degrees. This Masters provides key business skills to non-Business graduates and through its course content and programme delivery, non-Business graduates access current business leaders and learn alongside managers in the workplace, applying contemporary management theory and researching business solutions through team and individual assignments and a dissertation.
The MSc IT Management programme benefits from the unique research links between industry and NUIM’s Innovation Value Institute (IVI). The IVI works with over 90 global organisations including BCG, BP, SAP, BNY Mellon, E&Y, and Intel, amongst others. Teaching staff work across the School of Business and IVI, bringing unique, industry-led insights to the management of information technology.
The MSc Strategy & Innovation provides the Business graduate with insights into the latest developments in industry, including building experience in innovation management, entrepreneurship, and strategy development. As part of the required Business Research project, students use their existing Business knowledge to apply themselves to real-world industry challenges, linking Masters students with companies including Bewley’s, Bord Bia, Fáilte Ireland, and the Irish Red Cross, and helping them to contribute to the creation of new knowledge, products and services that underpin economic growth.
The School of Business at Maynooth is responding to new skills shortages in the marketplace, with the recent introduction of the MSc Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management. Endorsed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this new Masters programme is producing graduates who are ready for crisis management and major logistics challenges, attracting both experienced NGO and public-service professionals as well as final year students aiming to develop a career in a sector in which a real skills shortage exists.
Giedre Visockaite, a recent graduate of the MSc Strategy and Innovation programme, wrote about her experience at NUIM:
Having graduated from NUI Maynooth with a Masters Degree I can’t commend this university enough for its exceptional approach in gearing its students up for a successful career. My Finance and Venture Management degree from Maynooth was very enjoyable and gave me a wide range of skills in Finance, Economics, Business, Management and IT. In addition, a part of the degree was a 6-month work placement, which I completed in Beijing, China. This significantly helped develop my cultural intelligence and international business skills.
Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I wanted to advance my knowledge in the fields that interested me the most – Strategy and Innovation. I was delighted when I found out that the NUIM School of Business had introduced the MSc in Strategy and Innovation, as this was exactly what I had been looking for. This well-structured, extremely business focussed and challenging Masters programme was delivered by lecturers of the highest calibre from all over the world, who brought extensive experience to the class and gave it a real business flavour.
One of the highlights of the Masters programme was the Business Research Project. The way this was designed really impressed me. The applied nature of the research meant that all students got to work with companies all over Ireland and carry out research about real business problems, which made it a particularly beneficial and interesting experience. In addition, this created immediate employment opportunities for many students including myself. Based on successful completion of my Business Research Project and my overall performance, I was offered a permanent position in the company as Strategy and Innovation Analyst, after which I was promoted to the position of Manager of the Strategy and Innovation Department.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience studying in NUI Maynooth for 5 years. Not only did it give me immense knowledge in the subject areas I was really interested in, but it also provided exposure to the real world business environment and challenges and exciting employment opportunities.
