1 dead after South Korea helicopter crash – reportBy AP News Jul 17, 2014 1:34PM UTC
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Fire officials say one person has died after a firefighting helicopter crashed near an apartment complex and school in the southern South Korean city of Gwangju.
The officials said the helicopter from the provincial firefighting agency was returning to headquarters after participating in search operations for 11 people still missing after a ferry sinking that killed more than 290 in April. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of office rules.
The officials said the dead person is suspected to be the pilot. Another person was injured on the ground.
TV images showed the burning helicopter and a plume of black smoke rising up above buildings.
The ferry sinking caused widespread worry about South Korea’s lax safety culture. Most of the dead were high school students.
