KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A body found in the Malaysian jungle has been confirmed to be that of a British backpacker who disappeared late last month.

Thirty-four-year-old Gareth Huntley disappeared May 27 when he went on a trek to a waterfall on Tioman Island, off Malaysia’s southeast coast.

A body thought to be Huntley’s was found Wednesday, close to where he was living. His mother, Janet Southwell, then gave a blood sample to a hospital for a DNA comparison.

A British Foreign Office spokesman said Malaysian police confirmed Saturday that the body that was found was Huntley’s.

A spokesman for Huntley’s family confirmed that his body had been found.
