Missing Thai tanker taken by pirates, oil stolenBy AP News Jun 02, 2014 2:17PM UTC
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A maritime watchdog says a Thai tanker that went missing after leaving Singapore last week was taken by pirates, who stole its oil cargo.
The International Maritime Bureau says it has been informed by the ship’s owner that the Mt Orapin 4 has been released and arrived at Sri Racha Port in Thailand on Sunday.
Noel Choong, who heads the bureau’s piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur, said Monday that pirates intercepted the ship and destroyed its communication equipment before stealing the tanker’s shipment of oil. He said all 14 crew members were safe.
The ship’s owner lost contact with the vessel after it left Singapore on May 27. The ship was due at the Indonesian port of Pontianak two days later but failed to arrive.
