NUIM Student LifeBy National University of Ireland Maynooth May 28, 2014 3:00PM UTC
While academic achievement is important, the university experience is not just about academic success. It is also about fun, friendship, and getting involved in student life. National University of Ireland Maynooth is known for its active campus life. The atmosphere and buzz in the air create a thriving community spirit and vibrant student campus, and a wide variety of extra-curricular activities is open to students.
Clubs and Societies
Sports clubs and societies are run by students for students, and they are the lifeblood of student activity on campus. NUIM has over 100 active clubs (sporting) and societies (non-sporting). As well as being a welcome break from academic studies, clubs and societies are a great way to have fun, keep fit, meet people, make new friends, and develop new skills such as event planning, financial planning, and teamwork.
Art, design, comedy, music, drama, gaming, and history are amongst the most active societies at NUIM. While the soccer, rugby, snooker, and badminton clubs are very popular, students can also try their hand at aikido, archery, camogie and hurling, judo, kickboxing, paintball, surfing, volleyball and many more. With societies for arts and performance, debating and politics, social action and charities, and a wide range of sports clubs, there really is something for everyone.
More information about clubs and societies can be found in the Student Life and Sport pages on our website.
International Student Life
International students are warmly encouraged to get involved in every aspect of student life. A survey of international students at NUIM in 2013/14 found that over 80% had joined clubs and societies. Three-quarters of those surveyed believed that clubs and societies had helped them to make new friends, both International and Irish. Clubs such as Archery, Aikido, Basketball, Kick-boxing, Swimming, Volleyball and Yoga were very popular amongst International Students. In fact, the NUIM women’s volleyball team, which won the 2014 Intervarsity Volleyball League, was made up almost exclusively of international students! Many International students joined the Dance, Disney, French, Spanish/Mundo Latino, and International Societies.
The International Society is one of the most active societies on campus. Its members include international students and home students who have returned from study abroad or international exchange programmes. In 2013/14, students enjoyed movie nights, pizza parties, Céilís (traditional Irish dance), Thanksgiving Supper, Winter Masquerade Ball, Easter Dinner, day trips to Dublin city, Newgrange, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, as well as weekend trips to Galway, Belfast, and the Cliffs of Moher. The Society’s Facebook page includes lots of information about these trips and activities: https://www.facebook.com/MSU.International.Society?fref=ts
Capturing the Maynooth Experience
In the run-up to our recent Farewell Event for International Students, the NUIM International Office launched the 2013/14 International Student Photo/Video competition. Departing International students were asked to submit photos and videos of their time at NUIM under three headings, “Campus Life”, “Best Memory” and “Ireland Is…”. We are delighted to share our presentation of the students’ photos with you, and we also invite you to watch the winning video. This was filmed and edited by three of our Erasmus students at locations around the NUIM campus and Maynooth town. We hope you enjoy the photos and videos as much as we did when we watched them together at our Farewell Event!
