100 more Filipino suspects linked to sex blackmail scamBy AP News May 14, 2014 11:33AM UTC
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Philippine police official says about 100 more suspects have been linked to online blackmail syndicates, which extorted money from victims worldwide after luring them into exposing themselves in front of webcams or engaging in lewd chats.
Philippine police arrested 58 Filipino suspects in the capital, Manila, and three outlying regions two weeks ago in a crackdown backed by Interpol and police counterparts from four countries, including the United States. The suspects were traced after authorities reviewed online chats from some of the victims’ computers.
Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa said Tuesday that an ongoing investigation has linked 100 more suspects to the syndicates, including some who received a share of the money extorted from victims. He said the additional suspects will be arrested if evidence clearly shows their involvement.
