MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A court has ordered the arrest of eight Philippine coast guard personnel accused of homicide in the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman that soured bilateral relations last year.

A copy of the arrest order by the Regional Trial Court in northernmost Batanes province dated April 7 was made public by the Department of Justice on Tuesday. There was no explanation for the delay.

The judge set bail at 40,000 pesos ($899).

Government prosecutors filed the charges last month after rejecting allegations by the coast guard crew members that they fired at the Taiwanese fishing boat in self-defense. Prosecutors say there were no indications that the fishing boat posed any danger to the crew during the May 9, 2013, shooting.
