COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka says it has arrested 32 Indian fishermen who were fishing illegally in its territorial waters nearly two months after the two countries released hundreds of detained fishermen and their fisheries ministers agreed to cooperate in combatting poaching.
A navy statement Tuesday said naval patrolling craft arrested the 32 fishermen in in eight fishing trawlers the island’s northern seas on Monday and handed over to the fisheries department.
In January, fisheries ministers from both countries held talks to release a total of 283 Indian and 181 Sri Lankan fishermen and draw up long-term measures to prevent unlawful fishing.
They agreed to set up a committee of senior officials to discuss the issue.
