MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin has rejected the Western threat to punish Russia with sanctions over its action in Ukraine, saying they will backfire against the West.

Putin said Tuesday that the West should be bear in mind that it will also suffer damage from the sanctions. He called the sanctions “counterproductive and harmful.”

He sought to turn the tables on the West, accusing it of supporting the “anti-constitutional coup” in Ukraine and helping train armed protesters.
