COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lankan police say they’ve arrested 75 people who were attempting to migrate illegally to New Zealand by boat.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana says the suspects were arrested early Wednesday in the seaside town of Beruwala, about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of the capital, Colombo.

He says those arrested include 60 men, nine women and six children, and that they will appear before a court.

Hundreds of Sri Lankans try each year to leave illegally by boats for Australia, New Zealand and Europe looking for jobs.
