SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Police say four Indian police officers were injured in a gun battle with separatist militants in the troubled Himalayan region of Kashmir.

Inspector General A.G. Mir said the police were ambushed Tuesday in Sopore city, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) north of Srinagar, after receiving a tip that militants were operating in the area.

There was no immediate word on whether any militants had been hit.

Indian paramilitary forces have joined police in engaging the militants, Mir said.

The disputed and divided Kashmir region has seen a surge of violence in recent months as rebels step up demands for independence or incorporation into neighboring Pakistan.
