Is Australia run by anti-science climate change deniers?By Graham Land Jan 03, 2014 8:14AM UTC
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott once said in a speech that “the climate change argument is absolute crap” and then sort of tried to play it down while spewing a bunch of his own crap in a 2010 ABC radio interview.
Now Abbott’s top business advisor Maurice Newman is coming out saying that global warming is a delusion that is destroying Australia’s manufacturing industry. In an opinion piece for The Australian (premium content, I’m afraid) Newman states that under Labour and the Greens, Australia was taken “hostage” by what he calls “climate change madness”.
Here are some extracts from Newman’s piece (via the Sydney Morning Herald):
Climate change madness … has been a major factor in the decimation of our manufacturing industry. It is the unprecedented cost of energy, driven by the Renewable Energy Target and carbon tax, which, at the margin, has destroyed our competitiveness.
[T]he scientific delusion, the religion behind the climate crusade, [was] crumbling.
Before joining Tony Abbott’s team, Newman was the chairperson of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, chair of the Australian Stock Exchange and Chancellor of Macquarie University. As a long time stockbroker and investor Newman is decidedly against regulating business. He has come out in the past against wind farms and now renewable energy as a whole. Back in September he referred to anthropogenic climate change as a “myth”.
Pretty obvious he just likes unregulated markets and things that give his country a perceived industrial or trade advantage. Science does not play a part.
We know that most governments are in the thrall of industry and finance sectors, who either buy their influence or make up their ranks. These governments then make policies to benefit those benefactors who got them elected. This is the case with climate change denial in the US, where conservative think tanks receive $900 million US per year to promote their agenda, which includes discrediting scientific research on climate change. It works too. While 97% of climate scientists maintain that man-made climate change is real, the debate still rages on. This is because the “debate” is being paid for.
Despite the fact that research continues to show the risks of global temperature increases (4C by 2100) by analysing more factors, no significant action has been taken by the world’s governments to limit greenhouse gas emissions. The propaganda war is being fought, and science isn’t winning. Neither are the people – especially the poor of the developing world. The ultra-wealthy and their lackeys are winning by paying incredible amounts of money to fuel a war against science.
Rises in global average temperatures of [at least 4C by 2100] will have profound impacts on the world and the economies of many countries if we don’t urgently start to curb our emissions.
– Professor Steven Sherwood, at the University of New South Wales (via the Guardian)
Yet no major country is curbing emissions. This is in essence a crime – because the leaders of powerful industries are lying and essentially sentencing people to death so that they can make more money for themselves.
