Miss Philippines ‘sorry’ after Latina gaffeBy Asian Correspondent Oct 25, 2013 5:44PM UTC
Miss Philippines 2013 has Ariella Arida issued an apology on Twitter this week after making offensive remarks regarding Latinas’ English language skills during a television interview.
Speaking on the Philippines’ ABS-CBN News Channel’s (ANC) Headstart show, the 24-year-old said: “Latinas cannot even speak a sentence, right? I mean, a complete sentence in English… You know, I think, it’s the Filipinos who are very critical about this.”
Filipino DJ Mo Twister was quick to criticise Arida’s comments with a scathing attack on Instagram: “I don’t intend to bash on our Ms Philippines here but how the f*** is this not considered offensive toward Latinas. I mean, we ALWAYS get so sensitive when someone says anything about us Filipinos (see Dan Brown, Alec Baldwin, and every other time we screamed murder) yet our girl representing our country, in a legit interview regarding the competition, says Latinas can’t put a sentence together in English.”
The Filipina beauty was quick to apologize for her comments on Twitter, stating:
OM sorry. I didn’t mean to offend anyone from my last interview. I hope you guys can understand what Im trying to say.
The entire interview can be seen below. The controversial Latina comments, which ABS-CBN News describes as a ‘quip’, can be seen from 5min 24 sec:
