NEW DELHI (AP) — Nineteen inmates of a juvenile reform home in India’s capital escaped Sunday after clashing with security guards, police said.
About 60 of the facility’s 128 inmates, all under 18 years old, damaged furniture in their rooms and a liquefied cooking gas pipeline in the complex, police officer Rakesh Kumar said. As the guards tried to overpower them, 33 broke free and fled the home.
Police later captured and arrested 14 of those who escaped and were looking for the rest. The cause of the rioting by the juveniles was not immediately known, Kumar said.
The home in New Delhi’s northwest is run by the local government.
