BMW i InnovationIn April Professor Allan Hutchinson of the Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre at Oxford Brookes University attended the BMW i Innovation Days ‘Bringing a Revolution to Life’ event at BMW’s new state-of-the-art factory in Leipzig, Germany.

BMW invited groups of international visitors, drawn largely from suppliers and partners, to learn about their vision for future mobility and to witness the production concepts for the up-coming electric ‘i’ models. These new vehicles exploit a fully bonded multi-materials approach, with the main structural materials being aluminium and CFRP.

The visit provided a wealth of information about BMW’s vision, the detailed design and production of the BMW i3, and the reality of a totally different vehicle production method at Plant Leipzig. Production of the BMW i3 will start towards the end of 2013, followed soon after by the BMW i8.
