Australian minister calls for leadership ballot
By AP News Mar 21, 2013 10:30AM UTCCANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A senior government minister has called on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to hold a leadership ballot.
If Gillard refuses, Simon Crean said Thursday that government colleagues must sign a petition to force a ballot.
Australian prime ministers are selected by lawmakers in the ruling party.
Speculation has been growing that Gillard may be challenged before elections in August. Opinion polls have indicated her party would be soundly defeated.
