As you may or may not know, George Benjamin’s opera Written on Skin is receiving its UK premiere at the Royal Opera House in the coming weeks. George is one of the three composition lecturers at King’s and one of my favourite British composers. His presence in the department is a huge reason I chose to study at KCL. Last week he gave a lecture about the opera, giving us not only an overview of the main themes and plot, but also an insight into how he approached the work dramatically, how he worked with his librettist and where he started with the music.It’s rare that a composer will talk in such an in-depth way about their compositional processes but George was happy to break down his musical language and talk about the way in which he wrote the music
