Criminal Investigation students practising on a residential course
At the University of Derby we offer you the option to study the Criminal Investigation MSc. This course offers a unique approach to studying criminal investigations from initial information gathering through to prosecution.
Each of the course modules are designed around a particular crime set. The core examine the unifying features of crime such as the investigative process and suspects. However, optional modules that you choose include specific subject areas such as Business Crime and Contemporary issues in investigation. Due to the variety in the course it will help you in your investigative career regardless of the path you choose to specialise in.
During this course students will learn to develop a variety of different skills relating to the investigation sector. Practically, students will learn to develop investigative strategies as well as how to plan and take part in interviews with both witnesses and suspects. You will also get the opportunity to visit and manage a crime scene.
This course is also designed to cover all areas of investigation, not just police work. Other areas that you will examine include corporate and financial investigations through to social and welfare services. As this course is taught largely by former investigation professionals this highly vocational course compares contemporary international approaches.
This course also allows you to study in a variety of different ways. It is taught as a mixture of classroom work, group work and learning in simulated settings. There is also an emphasis on being reflective, helping you to think about how the course is helping you with improving your professional and career development.
